#mepolitics: Harpswell Town Meeting OKs continuation of round-the-clock EMS coverage, nearly double the amount spent from last year.

Harpswell voters at the Town Meeting on Saturday approved a proposal to extend round-the-clock paramedic coverage for the town, which began in January after initial approval by a special meeting the month before.

The contract for expanded services with Mid Coast Hospital will last from April to March 2015, and cost about $239,000, nearly double the amount spent last year.

Before this year, the town’s paramedic services only covered 12 hours a day, five days a week, with no weekend coverage. The expanded services cover 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will complement the town’s volunteer emergency medical technicians, who typically cannot respond to emergencies as fast as a dedicated paramedic can.
